Finally arrived. Been like a child on Xmas eve waiting on my Flintloque starter. I love the quality of the figures. Can hardly wait to start working on them. But the Mrs has a doctor’s appointment so I will have to make do reading the rule book.
Early on in the Prydian Civil War the chaos caused by the warring barons spread discord on planets across the Prydian precinct, especially those worlds that bordered the hardline Yordists sectors. One such world was that of New Berlin. New Berlin was never a mighty military power, and its ruling family, the Varner’s were content to stay loyal to the throne on their small agrarian planet and supply the loyalist cause.
This contentment was soon thrown into disarray when the Yordist patrol cruiser, Agamemnon intercepted a transport from New Berlin that was bound for a loyalist supply convoy. The Agamemnon wasted no time disabling the transport Sachsen, boarded her, slaughtered the crew, and plundered the resources for the Yordist marcher barons. The Sachsen was left adrift broadcasting a distress call warning that any other vessels aiding the crown would suffer the same fate.
When word of the Sachsen’s fate reached Baron Abraham Varner, he immediately activated his muster troops, house guard, and the planetary militia. Within a standard day he had raised an entire regiment of loyalist troops and several mixed companies of fighting vehicles. He also ordered his meager naval assets to form a protective blockade and to assist the arming of all civilian spacecraft with whatever spare arms they could find. He planned to defend New Berlin with every scrap of his being if necessary…soon it would be.
In response to the defensive stance New Berlin took following what had now been dubbed “The Sachsen Incident,” a small Yordist fleet was dispatched to quell the small upstart resistance movement. The Yordist advanced into the New Berlin defense perimeter with guns blazing, fighting recklessly with profound arrogance, with no regard for their opposition. However, the small undermanned naval forces of New Berlin managed to hold the line for an astonishing amount of time and even managed to briefly advance into the Yordist line long enough for the still arming civilian fleet rearguard to fall back behind the planet’s moon. After wading into the Yordist fleet it wasn’t long before Admiral Weiss fully embraced his fate and drove the prow of his Flagship, Hölle Faust, into the heart of the Yordist dreadnought, Perseus, shattering both hulls in sun like burst of flaming death. The explosion caused mass damage across the Yordist fleet but did not defeat it. Soon the small remaining ships launched three Castillas into the planet’s atmosphere, each carrying a regiment of Yordist troops.
The Yordist Castillas tore through the atmosphere towards the capital of New Berlin, Dresden, where the Varner Barony forces had assembled to protect their world. The long range defense cannon of Dresden managed to land solid hits on one the Castillas causing it to tumble uncontrolled through the sky. It slammed into the jagged Leipzig mountains several kilometers south of Dresden. The other two made safe landfall to the north and east of Dresden and immediately launched their troops into a full scale assault on the city.
The first few hours of combat cost both sides dearly as the hardened defenses of Dresden held true to the Yordist onslaught. By nightfall the first day the Yordist had only managed to advance into outer perimeter of the city’s defenses. The New Berliners had fallen back to a secondary defense line and began to strengthen their new positions under the night sky, the fleet still burning bright enough amongst the stars to be seen with the naked eye.
The next morning the Yordist forces once more began to push their position into the city’s center. For nearly twelve hours the small regiment of defenders managed to hold the entire Yordist invasion force at bay while Baron Varner managed to strategically evacuate the inhabitants of Dresden to his own aging Castillas on the far west side of the city. When the Yordist got wind of this movement they broke off part of their reserve force and sent them to cordon off the newly discovered exodus.
Baron Varner heard news of the approaching Yordist force and quickly moved the platoon guarding the Castillas into a defensive posture to meet the advancing enemy troops and just in time. The Dresden muster force setup an ambush on the hill in the woods above the ravine where the Yordist came pouring through. The ambush caught the Yordists completely off guard and a pitched battle ensued eventually forcing the Yordist troops to withdraw after suffering the loss of more than half of their forces, but revealing that the Yordist had an even far more superior number of forces than originally thought.
Realizing the defense of the city was inevitably going to fail following the defense at the ravine, and knowledge of the Yordist force size, Baron Varner ordered a full retreat of all of his Barony forces to the Castillas to defend the population of New Berlin’s battered civilian population. Not too proud to ask for help, Varner sent a distress signal to his closest ally and cousin, Baron Dragar Mestrovic in a neighboring sector of space. When the remaining ships in the Yordist fleet picked up the signal and began jamming it.
Nightfall on the second day saw the hostilities flicker out while both sides consolidated their numbers and prepared for the battle that the next day would bring. Several offers for surrender were sent to Baron Varner, all of which he sent a counter offer for.
As the dawn crept over New Berlin the Yordists sent a full frontal assault through the ravine and woods surrounding the Castillas. Within an hour the Yordist forces had taken the high grounds once used to ambush them and pushed onwards with murderous intent. The sudden change in momentum in the aggressor’s favor forced a difficult decision on Baron Varner’s behalf. The large burly man, standing nearly 2 meters tall, trimmed back his beard and shaved his stubbly bald scalp smooth before donning his old armor and taking to the field with his remaining house guard. He ordered the remaining militia guard to button up the Castillas and prepare to launch into orbit, personally leaving his son, Andreas in charge as the new Baron of their people. His son reluctantly agreed and prepared the ship for departure.
Baron Abraham Varner led the vanguard of the defense with his loyal house forces. Five hours passed as the Castillas made the necessary prep and finalized launch. The ground beneath them finally began to rumble with the heavy thrust of the flying fortress as it broke free of its old moorings and headed for space. Varner watched as the Castillas soared through the midday pale blue sky.
The Castillas broke out of the pull of New Berlin’s gravity, soaring into the black of space beyond. Suddenly alarms aboard the flight control deck chimed as the Yordist fleet moved to intercept them and then suddenly turned and made haste in the opposite direction as another small fleet suddenly burst in system. It was Baron Mestrovic’s forces come to the aid of their cousins of New Berlin. They rendezvoused with the Castillas and rendered aid to the survivors on board while several of the other ships in the small fleet gave chase to the Yordist whom suddenly found themselves surrounded as the newly armed and armored civilian fleet came out of hiding from behind the moon. A brief skirmish took place before the Yordist ships took the opportunity to break off and make a run for their own borders, but not before dropping heavy ordinance over Dresden on their way out of the system, gathering their straggling ground troops on the way.
The result of the Yordist bombardment was devastating on Dresden and New Berlin as a whole. The area of the planet that had been inhabited was largely destroyed and rendered uninhabitable. It was later also discovered that the Baron Varner had fallen in battle with the majority of his troops defending the launch of the Castillas. The remaining forces made their way to planetary transports and took what was left of the once one thousand troop strong regiment to meet their new Baron and his allied fleet once the Baron was laid to rest in the family vault in the shattered city outskirts. Less than three hundred troops along with a handful of Havelock battle suits and a company of mixed Adders rejoined their countrymen and traveled to the Mestrovic barony on Pecki.
After resettling the civilian population on Pecki on land granted them by Baron Mestrovic, the new Baron Varner met with his military and advisors and came to the decision not to try to resettle New Berlin. He also decided a Baron without a Barony wasn’t much of a Baron. With his cousin baron’s blessing he reformed his military as a mercenary unit for those willing to join him and offered his service first to the defense of Pecki and the Mestrovic barony. With nearly three hundred loyal New Berliner’s dedicated to continued service and the Code Galant, Varner reformed his military around the core of his house guard and dubbed them the Hessians.
Now in service to his cousin’s house, Varner and his Hessians eagerly await the day they are able to seek their final reckoning on the Yordist’s whom purged their barony from New Berlin and set them adrift in a sea of stars without hope or a home. The Baron Andreas Varner in exile has outfitted his fighting forces in tan and olive drab uniforms bearing his families blue and white heraldry as a unit patch. The unit proudly carries the Varner family coat of arms wherever they go that New Berlin never be forgotten amongst the thousands of worlds embattled.
“The Necromancer stood tall atop a throne of skulls carried by a dozen long dead minions who shuffle forward at his command. Ahead the last citadel of the Elves resists the remorseless advance of his army. Its walls are thick and strong no number of Zombies and Skeletons can ascend it to slaughter all within. They feel safe those lithe mortals but they are not. Booming retorts announce the arrival of the artillery of the damned. A line of cannons belching jets of grey smoke as their iron shots hammer the citadel. Soon, soon. Soon the Elves will be dead and the army will grow larger once more.”
