Our regularly scheduled programming was disrupted this week by the news of YouTube’s changes to its partner program.

So after much thinking we’ve decided to launch a patreon for the channel to help expand. Expect a flashy announcement for it in the next week or so.

The video explains in more detail.

Woke up to an email from YouTube this morning saying our entire YouTube channel is being demonetized and monetization won’t be enabled again unless we hit 1,000 subscribers in the next 30 days.

This is the second time in 6 months that YT has made changes to its partner policy that has meant our entire channel has lost its revenue.

We need 16 subscribers per day to make sure we reach the threshold so if you aren’t already, follow the link below to subscribe.

I’m going to run a competition on the channel to so that when we reach 1000 subscribers there will be a prize for one subscriber.

We hope you’ve all had a lovely holiday period.

We hope you’ve all had a lovely holiday period.

We got a nice Christmas present in the form of the Icarus Miniatures YouTube channel breaking 500 subscribers over the last couple days.

If you haven’t checked it out already, head on over to the link below and hit that subscribe button. In the new year we’ll be releasing new video tutorials for terrain and painting, as well as all sorts of other good stuff.

The redecoration is nearly finished.

The redecoration is nearly finished. I set up the worktables yesterday – which means all my painting and casting equipment is set up permanently and I still have 2 meters (6.5ft) of worktop space to craft larger projects on. There are shelves above to store terrain and casting materials and pretty much all the tools are right there to hand without the need to open drawers.

There’s still a fair bit of minute tidying and organizing to do before I can really start using the space, but with this done we can finally put all the issues caused by bringing production in-house behind us and start releasing new minis again.

It’s been a difficult year for Icarus, the casting issues we faced back in Q1 really set us back. but come the New Year everything should be up and running which means a restock of the website and the new sculpts for the Gunslinger and male troopers going on sale!

And once I have had a chance to play around in the space, video content will start again. I’ve got lots of ideas for new content, including a series on how to go from a blank green mat (the starting point for many gamers) to a beautiful table of terrain.

I will also be documenting my return to Middle Earth gaming – there’s a lot of exciting things coming for the Middle Earth SBG in 2018 and I want to get back into the game that got me started with miniature wargames. So expect some cool Middle Earth tutorials to come.

This will likely be my last post of 2017. With Christmas so close I’ll be winding down and focusing on getting the new workspace sorted and enjoying a break!

However you choose to enjoy yourself over the next couple of weeks, I hope you have an amazing time. Stay safe, be good, and keep being awesome.

Happy Holidays
Much love

Workspace Update: Walls have been painted and some of the new furniture has been assembled (waiting for the rest to arrive).

As with most things in life, it’s taking longer than expected (I spent 6+ hours yesterday building a monster of a bed), so work flow will be disrupted for a little while longer yet.

The good news though is that there will be lots more space to work once it’s done and there will be dedicated spaces for casting, painting, terrain fabrication, and stock storage.

I’d show you a progress picture, but at the moment it’s just piles of boxes as far as the eye can see!

As always, we won’t be having any kind of Black Friday sale over the weekend.

Being from the UK, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, and we refuse to take part in the ever increasing commercialization of random days if there isn’t also Turkey involved!

If you’ve got a little extra cash burning a hole in your pocket this weekend, instead of adding to your pile of unpainted minis, why not donate to a charity?

If you’re from the US there are some charities that are particularly likely to need every extra cent over the next few years, such as the ACLU, PP, CAIR, or EarthJustice to name but a few.

If you want to go more local, donating to food banks, shelters, and crisis centers will make sure people who really need the help over the winter are better cared for.

However you choose to spend your weekend, we hope it’s full of awesome.

With the new workspace just weeks away and the return…

With the new workspace just weeks away and the return to filming coming, I’ve been exploring new editing options.

The software I’ve been using for previous videos is perfectly fine as a cut and slice program, but lacks a lot of the more powerful features needed for me to produce the kind of content I want efficiently.

So tonight I’ve been playing with Corel Videostudio Pro and so far it looks very promising indeed.

My favourite thing so far is the multi-cam editing capabilities. You can load in several video clips, sync the audio, then just point and click along the timeline where you want to switch from one camera feed to another.

This will come in super handy as I start to experiment with a multiple camera setup.

Another oldie; how to make security fences.

Another oldie; how to make security fences.

This and the other 2 parts are some of my favourite tutorials because they are really easy to make, but add lots of great visual detail to your gaming table.

What sort of tutorials would you like to see when we come back after the redecoration?

Something a bit different for you this evening.

Something a bit different for you this evening.

This is really cool looking RPG system that emulates the style of 80’s stories like Goonies, Stranger Things etc.

It’s got some interesting dice mechanics (your competency with a skill is shown by a different die. So if you’re terrible at climbing, you only get a d4 on climb, but if you’re a tech wizard, you might get a d20. But the top results always explode giving you the chance to always be awesome.

It’s a collaborative world-building game, so it seems like the GM prep time will be significantly lower than with games like D&D, meaning you can run a game at much shorter notice.

I’m gonna back it for the PDF copy. It seems like the perfect game to allow some of my friends who aren’t part of my D&D group the chance to join us and have some RPG fun, without swelling the D&D party to an unmanageable size.
